CAN I MAKE MY OWN DECISIONS ABOUT MY TREATMENT?

You should not be forced to stay in hospital if you can show that the treatment or assessment you have been admitted for could be given to you outside your unit, perhaps in the community or even as a day-patient, and you will agree to the treatment. This is because the Mental Health Act 1983 says that you should only be detained if that is the only way to provide you with the treatment you need.
